Love the home your in

Often, people who are thinking about upgrading to a newer, larger home forget that at one time, they thought the house or condominium they live in was perfect. If you learn to love the home you’re in, perhaps by making repairs and/or improvements, you will save a lot of money on the moving process.

It is not hard to love the home you’re in.  Take a look around!  What improvements can you make to your current home in order to make it seem fresh? It’s amazing how a new coat of paint inside and out can make a difference.  Would adding on a room, an enclosed porch or even another bathroom make your home feel new to you?  Remodeling existing rooms and the kitchen will cost a lot less than adding new ones. 

If you have kids, it is imperative to think of their needs.  Most kids would prefer not to move from their current neighborhood and circle of friends.  They usually do not relish the idea of changing schools or feeling misplaced upon moving.  Loving the home you’re in can help them avoid that adjustment. They can keep their friends in the neighborhood and, most importantly, stay in the school they are familiar with.

Making the necessary changes to your home can be a family project.  Planning any remodeling that needs to be done, small changes that can be made, and ideas for making the home you’re in more comfortable should be shared by all family members.  Start by prioritizing what you want to do, how much it will cost, and perhaps assigning certain projects to different family members. For instance, include your son or daughter when deciding on paint colors for their own rooms as well as asking them to help paint.

 Learning to love the home you’re in can be a fun, creative way of feeling as if you are in a new environment without going to all the expense of a new home.  Do not overlook ideas such as additions (a screen porch is great in warm weather, an additional bathroom would benefit everyone) or other remodeling plans.  The kitchen is often a problem area that can be quickly updated by adding new cabinets, tile and countertops. New appliances can make a world of difference and many stores have sales throughout the year. 

Don’t forget the outside of your home!  If your home needs sprucing up inside, it more than likely needs the same on the outside.  Windows, shutters and landscaping can all make the home you’re in not only more appealing to others, but to you and your family as well. It is amazing how great a flower or vegetable garden can make you feel!

 It may amaze you that even if you need to refinance your home or take out an equity loan in order to make improvements, it might still be a bargain compared to having to go through buying a replacement home.
